50 amps is one of the most common current ratings that we need a meter, breaker, or wire for. Top questions about 50A cable include:

First, let's clear the AWG wire gauge:

If you check theWire ampacity chart here, you can see that there are 3 AWG wire sizes with a current carrying capacity of almost 50 amps. These are:

  • 8 AWG wire with 50A current rating (very small).

Well, choosing 8 AWG wire with 50A current carrying capacity seems like a good choice for a 50A wire size, right? However, in almost all cases thecorrectThe 50A wire size is6 AWG with 65A capacity. This applies to any voltage; 12V, 110V, 115V, 120V, 220V, 240V, you name it.

Why this?

We must consider the 80% breaker rating rule set forth in the National Electrical Code (NEC) rules. The maximum load for each branch circuit is 80% of the circuit rating for the cable ampacity for each load.

Let's take a quick look at how to choose the right AWG wire for 50 amps (or any amps). Later we will also see when a 6 AWG wire is not suitable as a 50A wire (due to distance voltage losses) and what you can achieve with a 50A 110V or 220/240V circuit :

50A cable size (using the NEC 80% rule)

You can't use 50A wire to make a 50A circuit. If you do, you'll likely fry the circuit.

The 80% rule serves as a safety measure. Beyond the current rating of 50A, you should have at least 20% more.

To calculate at least how much ampacity a 50 amp cable should have:

Wire rating for 50 amps= 50A / 0,8 =Fio 62,5A

That means you need to use a cable that can handle 62.5 amps like a 50 amp cable. Now we don't have a 62.5A cable. The next wire we have is a 6 AWG cable rated at 65A.

Monitoring:You can always use a larger thread, but never a smaller thread. For 50 amps, you can use 4 AWG wire with 85A current rating (a little overkill, but that's okay), but you can never use 8 AWG wire with 50A current rating (you'd fry the circuit ).

In most cases a 6 AWG wire is almost the perfect size for a 50A circuit breaker. In some cases you will probably need to use a larger 4 AWG wire. This is when you have a long circuit and are sending electrical current some distance (100 feet or more).

50A wire size over 100 feet away (accounts for voltage drop)

Even if you are sending power over a long distance (e.g. to a 50A switchboard 30 meters away) you still need to consider the voltage drop.

A good rule of thumb for voltage drops is:

Tension drops by 20% for every 100 feet.

To get the same power (wattage) at the subpanel 100 feet away, you need to turn up the amplifiers by 20% (to compensate for the 20% voltage drop).

Of course, this means you are dealing with more current (more amps) and should choose a larger wire.

Example: 50A wire is typically 6 AWG (we need at least 62.5A and 6AWG can handle 65A). If you need to power an electrical device 100 feet away, you need 20% more. Instead of 62.5A you see 62.5A × 1.2 = 75A.

In this case, a 6 AWG, 65 A wire will not suffice. We need at least 75A. The closest wire size that can handle more than 75A is 4 AWG wire. This can handle 85 amps and is commonly used as a 50 amp wire size for subpanels 100 feet away.

There are many questions about 50 amps and different voltages. Let's tackle that too:

What size wire do I need for 50 amps at 110-240v?

A common misconception about 50 amp cords is that we need different sized cords for different voltages. We don't need a larger (or smaller) cable cross-section for 50 A at 240 V than, for example, for 50 A at 110 V.

In all cases (except when we need to account for voltage drops) we use 6 AWG wire for 50 amps.

Now the wire size and amps can be the same. At different voltages we don't get different amperes; we get different power (watt).

Which cable cross-section for 50 amps 220 V?

For example, a 50A wire on a 220V circuit (you need 6AWG wire) can handle up to 11,000W of power (this is a very common RV electrical configuration). Here's how you can calculate it:

Performance= Ampere × Volt = 50A ×220V=11.000W

If you have a 110V circuit, the 50 amps will produce 5500W of power.
