3. Things I want to know about my client: Are there any warning signs of suicide in her behavior. Warning signs to look out for include withdrawing from activities, isolating from family and friends, sleeping too much or too little, hopelessness about the future, loss of interest and anger. After reviewing the written records, I concluded Sue was at risk for suicide due to depression and possible mental illness. So in your safety intervention plan, I would include the following: warning signs, preferred internal coping strategies, social connections that can distract you from the crisis, family or friends who can help, making your environment more Safe and conducive to positive thinking, helping her recognize reasons to move on and professionals to turn to in times of crisis. Several risk factors were identified during the interview with the client. I observed that this person had symptoms of PTSD. He seems to be reliving a series of traumatic events he's been through (his father's physical and emotional abuse, his friend's death in an explosion and his survival). He also used alcohol as a way of coping and sleeping. The person also said he lost his identity. He said he should support his family. However, he has no job and can only rely on his wife, who is the only one who works as a nurse. I found it interesting that he referred to himself as a "nanny" rather than a stay-at-home dad or anything like that. The individual also stated that he has no significant support relationships. He has no friends or support. Because of their quarrels and arguments, he doesn't consider his wife a supporter.
According to James and Gilliland (2017), Robert identified with a series of "characteristics of a suicidal person". He is enduring excruciating psychological pain (traumatic event), and he expresses emotional (despair over work situation) and relational (personal communication that he is contemplating ending his own life or believes that everyone is better off without him) ). Another risk factor is the availability of firearms.

I think it's important for Robert to address his issue of getting a gun. I think it was also important for Robert to identify key people he could talk to when he felt suicidal. I would also be interested if Robert discussed with his son and his wife what he thinks they are better off without him. I think it's important to provide Robert with a suicide prevention hotline. I'm also inclined to connect him with a veterans support group to help Robert get some natural support.

Robert, a military veteran, is seeking counseling to deal with a recent row with his significant other. Most of his men died after running over the dynamite, which made him feel guilty for surviving without them. He also had a history of abuse as a child, and he was concerned about his growing violent tendencies. He noted that he still had the weapon, but denied any intention of using it against himself. Robert also said he drank a case of beer every night to suppress his emotions enough to sleep, and felt that paying big bucks for beer would make him a burden to his family. Therefore, his counselor began gathering information on whether he was at risk for suicidal behavior (Laureate Education, 2018).

Based on his traumatic military experience, symptoms, and duration, Robert may have suffered from PTSD (James & Gilliand, 2017). PTSD is a risk factor for suicide, as is substance abuse (May & Klonsky, 2016). Additionally, he discusses whether the pain he feels is worth living on (Laureate Education, 2018). In fact, suicidal thoughts like this are also a risk factor for eventual attempts and death (Ballard et al., 2016). Other risk factors present in Robert's case included childhood abuse, isolation, guilt, overload, and carrying a weapon (James & Gilliand, 2017). Therefore, the information provided in the audio interviews indicated a high suicide risk. However, there is still some risk information that must be gathered.

Because this assessment is based entirely on interview audio, no information was available on Robert's appearance and body language. The ability to perform a visual assessment is critical when dealing with potentially suicidal clients, as there are multiple behavioral cues that indicate increased risk (James & Gilliand, 2017). Visual assessment can identify agitation, which is a predictor of suicidal behavior (Ballard et al., 2016). Counselors may also look for obvious cuts, burns, hair pulling, and other forms of self-injury, as non-suicidal self-injury can predict transition from suicidal ideation to suicide attempt (Nock et al., 2018). Also, it's a good idea to ask Robert if he has any specific suicide plans. He shared that he owns a gun, which itself is a suicide risk factor (James & Gilliand, 2017). Essentially, his advisors had to gather more information about whether Robert made a suicide plan involving a firearm. Ultimately, this information can play a key role in developing a security plan.

The safety program provides clients with information on how to recognize crisis situations, how to utilize personal support systems, and how to contact mental health professionals. As a result, the safety program reduced suicide attempts, reduced the frequency of hospitalizations, and increased the frequency of encounters with outpatient mental health personnel. Associated with multiple benefits, including fewer suicide attempts, fewer hospitalizations, and more frequent contact with outpatient mental health professionals. While a suicide plan should be tailored to each client's needs, common themes include accessing family support, contacting a hotline, and reducing access to lethal means (Zonana, Simberlund, & Christos, 2018). Thus, Robert's suicide plan likely included surrendering his firearm, identifying family members he may have been exposed to, and gathering contact information for local suicide prevention services.
