Medical error interviews (2023)

  • 94 - Laura Johnson: A Serious Medical Incompetence Kills Her Father...And How Many More?

When Laura Johnson's father, Bill, a healthy and active senior, underwent a simple medical procedure, Laura's instinct told her to miss work and come with him to protect him. But Bill told her he had a friend with him and reassured Laura it would be fine because "how bad could they screw this up". Tragically, Laura's instinct was right. His father was not safe in this hospital under his care. And the doctor in charge of Bill's care is the daughter of a doctor jailed for medical fraud. The medicinal apple doesn't fall far from the criminal tree. Laura recounts what happened to her father, how he was framed when the procedure went wrong, and how a staggering level of medical incompetence led to his early death. • 93 - Carol Sunnucks: The joy of childbirth, the harm of medicine, the betrayal of systems

Medical errors and harm can take many forms and occur in almost all medical contexts, except perhaps during autopsies. So if a medical error occurs during a happy event like childbirth, it can not only spoil the immediate experience, but also cause lifelong suffering and disability. This is what happened to Carol Sunnucks when she went to the hospital to give birth to her son Kai. It was hard work and they had to use a suction device to get Kai out, but the doctor didn't examine Carol for internal damage after this difficult procedure. This would be disastrous for Carol's health and future. To make matters exponentially worse, the medical error and the damage it caused went undetected for so long that any hope of Carol's return to normal bodily functions seemed to have vanished. Add to this the betrayal Carol subsequently experienced from both the legal and healthcare systems. Carol and I spoke about her experiences and what she is doing to understand the failures of others. • 92 - Ashanti Daniel, RN: Are Nurses Immune to Doctor Manipulation? Not if you're a black woman

Ashanti Daniel is one of those people who met their professional destiny as a child and then made it true. As a nurse, Ashanti had insight into how the healthcare system worked. When she became seriously ill and was hospitalized several times, she thought that her work as a healthcare professional would be legitimate in the eyes of her medical colleagues. But Ashanti quickly discovered that a black woman with "normal" results on routine medical tests trumped years of work as a medical professional. While medical gaslighting is endemic throughout the health care system, it is particularly evident when you have a condition for which there are no biomarkers and you are a woman of color. Ask anyone suffering from a complex chronic illness and you will surely hear a story of doctors denying the patient the experience of their own body and instead attributing physical symptoms to psychological causes. And this is based on nothing but the doctor's prejudices, prejudices and ego. For Black patients with complex illness, it could be argued that the operationalized "standard of care" is manipulation. As Ashanti has learned, a doctor can write whatever he wants about a patient in a patient's medical records. It doesn't have to be true. The power doctors wield over people is the power of life and death. At their whim, they can refuse tests, ignore a diagnosis, and label a person as mentally ill. In some jurisdictions, doctors can commit a person to a psychiatric hospital against their will. The medical system is a pathological mess driven and controlled by a complex culture of God. Until doctors change their culture, there will continue to be many doctors doing great harm through unbelieving patients, as Long COVID patients are discovering in droves. • 91 - Colette, daughter of Andy McCulloch: Why don't you listen to me? An investigation into medical negligence

In the early morning of July 28, 2016, Colette McCulloch was hit by a bus and killed. Eighteen hours earlier, Colette had left the specialized care center for autistic adults where she was being treated. During Colette's short life, her parents, Andy and Amanda, sought out medical professionals to try to explain and reassure their youngest daughter's extraordinary mind. Since Colette's death, Andy and Amanda have battled various medical and legal authorities to expose the flaws in their care and treatment. In our interview, author Andy McCulloch tells the story of his daughter's life and early death: the years her autism went undiagnosed, her lifelong battle with eating disorders, and the lack of support for her complex needs. Despite these challenges, Colette made her way to college to pursue her passion for literature and get her writing published. Last year, Andy and Amanda wrote a book about their family's experiences with the healthcare system called Why Can't You Hear Me? - and includes some of Colette's lyrics, in which she articulates her experiences struggling with a world that is always at odds with her. With this book, Colette's dream of publishing her words has come true. Ultimately, Colette's story is a call to action and a message of hope for a future where people with autism can be better understood, cared for, and thrive. • 90 - Michelle Hedgcoth: How the transvaginal mesh ruined my body and career but not my mind

Implanting plastic mesh in our bodies doesn't seem like a wise move, and it wouldn't have happened to Michelle Hedgcoth if a previous medical error hadn't damaged her body. Michelle was a healthy and happy career woman at birth, but the doctor who performed Michelle's episiotomy was unable to stitch it up after the birth. This failure would have devastating consequences in all aspects of Michelle's life. To "fix" their mistake, doctors performed surgery to implant a plastic mesh in Michelle's abdomen. Plastic fabric that can dissolve and release toxic and disgusting toxins Plastic fabric that can twist, break and puncture internal organs Plastic fabric that can stick to organs so it can never come loose. In this interview, Michelle tells us what happened to her in the healthcare system, the impact it has had on her body, her health, her family, her career and what she is doing today to educate others about the dangers of mesh.
